Steve Nash Profile

Steve Nash - Phoenix Suns

Steve Nash
Born February 7, 1974 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Nash is a professional basketball player from Canada. He currently plays for the NBA's Phoenix Sunsas well as the Canadian National Team in the Olympics and World Championship competitions. Nash is the NBA's reigning back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP).

After nearly 8 seasons in the NBA (drafted by Suns in 1996), Steve Nash has won the NBA's MVP award twice: after the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons.  Nash is arguably the best point guard in the NBA. He led the league in assists during his MVP seasons, averaging 11.5 assists per game in 2004-05 and 10.5 in the 2005-06 season. During the 2005 season, Steve Nash's assist-to-turnover ratio was 2.98 - good for 11th among NBA guards.  Nash is a high percentage three-point shooter (42.1% lifetime average) and an outstanding free throw shooter: his lifetime average of 89.6% is third in NBA history. Nash is also very effective playing the pick-n-roll; as seen in Dallas with former teammate Dirk Nowitzki and now with the Phoenix Suns' Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire.

As a teammate, Steve Nash is known for his incredible leadership qualities. To see evidence of his abilities, look no further than the Suns own record from before Steve started (29-53) in 2003-04, to his first season (back) with the Suns (62-20) in 2004-05. The improved record is one thing, but Nash was essential in Phoenix's rise to the Conference Finals for the first time in 11 years. In the 2005-2006 season, Nash led the Suns team into the Conference Finals again, despite the injuries of all three big men: Amare Stoudemire, Kurt Thomas and Brian Grant. For the repeat performance (w/out these weapons), Nash was awarded his second MVP award.
